Launch of the GeoSpa-

tial Innovation Award

40,000 buildings in 63 areas in

first phase of Makani

The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA)

launched the Geospatial Innovation Award for

the Municipal System as part of an initiative to

support innovative and creative thinking in the

municipal system. The award comes under the

slogan “Make Innovation Yours”.

The initiative focuses on finding creative and

advanced solutions that allow the improvement

and development work in the municipal sector,

including systems applications and other smart

applications solutions.

The Geospatial Innovation Award is related

mainly to the applications and geospatial sys-

tems in the municipal system, and opens the

door to the staff of the municipal system where

they can participate in the award.

The award aims to develop services and geo-

spatial interaction with the community and peo-

ple with special needs, use advanced technol-

ogy and geospatial data solutions to improve the

accuracy of and quality of services offered to all

customers, individuals and institutions.

Dubai Municipality will be installing Makani smart

boards in 40,000 buildings located in 63 different

areas throughout the first phase of the project.

The first phase will include government depart-

ments, and metro stations and expected to be

completed in October 2015.

Dubai Municipality is working intensively now on

completing all the contractual requirements with

the company executing Makani smart boards

project, which will be implemented in several

phases to cover all areas in Dubai. It will include

the free zones, Hatta village and farms. Makani

boards will be installed at the entrances of all

buildings, warehouses, factories, hotels, schools,

mosques and farms in Dubai.

The 10-digit coordinates on the board allow us-

ers to accurately locate the entrance of the build-

ing. The board includes the QR Code, the can

be scanned in your smart phone through Makani

app or any other app to locate the building. Af-

ter scanning the code or entering the 10-digit

number, users can obtain additional information

through the Makani app such as the name and

numbers of the area, building and streets, as well

as many other services.

MOI’s Innovation Lab receives

suggestions/ideas from the public

The Ministry of Interior, through its “In-

novation Lab” initiative launched in mid-

June 2015, called upon the public to con-

tinue sending constructive suggestions

and opinions through the MOI’s various

communication channels, in order to

come up with solutions to reduce traffic

accidents. The four main causes of acci-

dents were determined to be speed, run,

use of mobile phones while driving, and

sudden/unsignaled turns.

The ‘traffic accidents’ topic was chosen,

following thorough analysis of the ideas

and proposals submitted by the public

via the Innovation Lab over the past two

months. The ‘traffic accidents’ topic was

the most mentioned by participants, as

a major challenge that needs to be ad-

dressed in all possible ways, especially

through the innovative solutions submit-

ted by the public.

After receiving all entries, the Innovation

Lab workshops will be held to choose,

analyze and study the best solutions/sug-

gestions with the aim to implement them

and bring attention to these entries and

their submitters.

The MOI launched the hashtag # The

Innovation-Lab-of the Ministry–of Interior

on the MoI’s social networking sites (Ins-

tagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and

Google+).
