The UAE SDG Data Hub monitors and records the country’s progress in achieving the SDGs. It has been actively participating in events and forums relating to SDGs globally. This page covers the need and the aims of launching the portals of UN Stats Open SDG Data Hub and UAE SDG Data Hub. It also covers the major initiatives undertaken by the UAE to achieve the 17 SDGs.
The UAE SDG Data Hub is similar to UN Stats Open SDG Data Hub in concept. It monitors and records the country’s progress in achieving the SDGs.
The Hub includes four main elements. They are:
The UAE was the first country in the Gulf region to launch the SDG Data Hub in October 2017. This was a joint effort between Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). Globally, the UAE was the first country to include SDG-related initiatives as a part of the SDG hub in February 2019. These initiatives shed light on UAE’s relentless efforts towards achieving the SDGs.
The UAE started publishing data to the UN SDG portal in February 2019 making it the second country worldwide (after Ireland) and the first country in the Middle East to publish relevant data and statistics.

The UN Stats Open SDG Data Hub is a portal that provides information on the development and implementation of initiatives and other efforts that contribute to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030 as set by the United Nations.
The Open SDG Data Hub aims to be a one-stop resource for decision-makers, policy-makers, international observers, media for data and information relating to the progress of countries towards achieving the SDGs.
The portal helps experts with regular supply of authentic and updated information for them to monitor and analyze the status of progress of each country and if needed, to modify create policies. This helps in promoting transparency towards the SDGs.

UAE Foreign Aid Initiative
UAE has always been a forerunner in providing aid for communities around the world. This upholds the philosophy of UAE to treat the entire world with a feeling of brotherhood. Based on these lines, The UAE Foreign Aid initiative continually provides aid to communities with an intention to establish effective partnerships. UAE’s aid always aims to eradicate poverty while increasing international peace and stability which guarantees the improvement of living standards of all people. Institutions like Emirates Airline Foundation, Sharjah Charity House, Emirates Red Crescent and Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation work in hand to achieve philanthropic goals.

Air Quality Index Initiative
In line with SDG 11 for creating sustainable cities and communities, UAE has launched the UAE Air Quality Index (AQI) Initiative. This initiative utilizes cutting-edge technology to monitor air quality on a real-time basis and uses specific algorithms to forecast the AQI status for up to three days in advance. It also predicts the concentration of dust and particulate matters with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns, a particulate matter (PM) level of 2.5. These highly accurate air quality readings are based on satellite data. This largely helps decision-makers to create strategies and policies that create an impact to reduce air pollution. Usage of Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping software like ESRI helps provide information in a geospatial manner that makes understanding and processing of data much easier.
There are 51 Air Quality Stations located all over UAE that help us know the level of particulate matter, air quality and the air quality index for up to 3 days. This can be easily accessed by the MOCCAE Smart App on the Apple Store and Google Play.

UAE Sustainable Wildlife
In line with SDG 14 concerning life below water and SDG 15 concerning life on land, UAE has launched the UAE Sustainable Wildlife Initiative that targets to ensure sustainable wildlife in the country along with raising awareness about how important it is to preserve biodiversity. These aims are also in line with achieving the targets set by Aichi Targets 2021. The three pillars of this initiative are:
This follows the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list Methodology to identify and assess birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, selected marine species (sharks, rays and corals) and publish a national Red List Assessment for the UAE by 2020. The IBA Regional Inventory identified 19 sites in the UAE and recognized them as Important Bird Areas in 1994. The number of sites has been updated to 30 which is a significant progress in conservation and protection of these areas. This indicates that significant efforts have gone into identifying, monitoring and subsequently conserving the priority sites and that the UAE is complying with Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), including the Raptor Memorandum of Understanding and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), as well as the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention). UAE is home to 43 nature reserves with significant environmental assets. With inbound tourists reaching 16 million in 2017, the concept of ecotourism is picking up pace to help people understand and embrace the natural wonders of UAE. Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) is actively raising awareness about ecotourism and as part of its mandate it has launched a multi-phase national project named ‘The UAE’s Natural Wonders’ to promote ecotourism across the seven emirates.
The GeoEnvAE mobile application by MOCCAE available on Apple Store and the Google Play provides users with spatial information related to ministry’s service centers covering all of UAE including environment, biodiversity, protected areas, and agricultural statistics information.
Rehabilitation of Coastal and Marine Habitat Initiative
In line with SDG 14 concerning life below water and SDG 15 concerning life on land, UAE has launched the Rehabilitation of Coastal and Marine Habitat Initiative. Creating a sustainable natural ecosystem, preserving marine life, rehabilitating degraded coastal areas, restoring coral reefs is all in the framework of the Strategy 2017-2021 in the framework of the Ministry of Climate Change & Environment. Preserving natural habitats and providing a multi-dimensional community structure for marine organisms are of utmost importance for a sustainable environment.
The Mangroves Cultivation Project has ensured that 273,210 mangrove seedlings have been planted in an area of 283,068 sq. meters to help maintain the ecological balance.
Artificial Reef Deployment has helped to promote marine fauna. 2,805 artificial reefs deployed within an area of 154,709 sq. meters and 20,000 coral fragments transplanted in an area of 2,500,000 sq. meters in partnership with local authorities is one of the major achievements in creating a sustainable environment.

Environmental Performance Enhancement Initiative
In line with SDG 11 for creating sustainable cities and communities, UAE has launched the Environmental Performance Enhancement Initiative. The aim of this initiative is to create a centralized integrated system that improves and strengthens the environmental performance of the country to improve the global competitiveness index in line with the UAE 2071 targets. This helps the country to achieve the Vision 2021 by creating an economy that is diverse and contributes to sustainable development based on innovation and research.

Integrated Waste Management in the UAE
